TONSILLECTOMY

Are you one of those parents who wonder if it is wise for your child to have the tonsils taken out, considering the recurrent throat infections and the agony caused by it for your child?

Tonsillitisor inflammation of the tonsils caused by infection of virus or bacteria is often successfully treated with a course of antibiotics.

Only some complicated cases may require a tonsillectomy. It is important to know that Tonsillectomy (surgical removal of tonsils) is preferred only as the last resort to tonsillitis treatment and there are always risks associated with surgery.

Tonsillectomy may be recommended if your child has:

  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Difficulty in breathing while sleeping or Sleep Apnea or Obstructed breathing during sleep
  • Snoring problem
  • Recurring throat infections or throat abscesses
  • Frequent infections (7 or more times in 1 year, 5 or more times over 2 years, or 3 or more times over 3 years)
  • Been missing school often.

Other indications for tonsillectomy may include:

  • Not responding to antibiotics
  • Recurrent ear infections
  • Peritonsillar abscess
  • Recurring chronic tonsillitis
  • Swallowing or speech abnormalities
What to Expect?

If you're advised tonsillectomy by your doctor, know what to expect by clarifying with your surgeon. Every surgeon has a different technique for removal of tonsils. The surgical procedure of tonsillectomy can be performed with adenoidectomy or even without it. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis under general or local anesthesia on the choice of surgeon. Different methods of procedure used are:

  • Laser
  • Electrocautery
  • Metal snares
  • Scissors
  • Blunt dissecting instruments

Tonsillectomy involves, the surgeon removing the tonsils through the mouth without making a cut on the skin. Many children can go home on the same day of surgery after observation in the recovery room for several hours. Traditionally the tonsils are completely removed, but in Intracapsular (partial) tonsillectomy only the inflamed tonsil tissue is removed leaving behind very small part of the tonsil tissue. This helps to protect the throat muscles and as a result, reduce the pain and makes it easier to eat and drink.

Recovery:It can take a week or more to recover from a tonsillectomy. During that period the person will have a sore throat, and may have difficulty in eating and drinking. Pain medication andother antibiotics prescribed, may help to manage the pain and recovery.

Types of Tonsillectomy

Coblation Tonsillectomy: An ablation wand (pen-like device) and radio frequency radiation are used to remove tonsils either partially or completely as part of this procedure. The procedure helps in removing the tonsils safely without damaging the surrounding tissues. The entire procedure takes about 30-45 minutes time and is done under general or local anesthesia.

Laser Tonsillectomy: This is a technique performed in patients suffering from severe tonsillitis or from enlarged tonsils. The laser technique is state of the art technology, minimally invasive and aimed at improving the patient's condition by reducing the size of the tonsils without physically cutting thus reducing the discomfort and improving recovery period for the patient.
