BALLOON SINUPLASTY

Balloon Sinuplasty is a type of endoscopic surgery to open the blocked sinus passage ways and relieve many sinuses. It is performed to treat patients with sinusitis seeking relief from uncomfortable sinus pain. This is a safe and effective sinus procedure for chronic sinusitis. This surgery can be performed in a hospital or in the office of an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) physician.

Sinusitis is an infection or inflammation of the sinuses. In general health, sinus cavities (sinuses) present surrounding our eyes are usually filled with air. Secondary to allergies, bacterial infection, or due to deviated septum (anatomical issues), the natural sinus outflow tracts become obstructed and get blocked. This will lead to pressure on the sinuses resulting in symptoms such as facial pressure, headache, congestion, fever, fatigue, migraines, snoring, and cough.

Ballon Sinuplasty Procedure

The surgery is performed under local or general anaesthesia. This procedure involves the insertion of a small sinus balloon into the blocked natural outflow tracts of the sinuses using a tiny telescope. Placement of the balloon within the sinus cavity is checked by illuminating an LED light attached to the balloon and sometimes using a 3D computer assistance program to confirm accurate placement.

Once the placement is checked and confirmed, your ENT surgeon will then inflate the balloon to dilate the blocked outflow tracts. This allows the sinus to drain normally, relieving the symptoms and the infection. Eventually, the balloon is removed, leaving no foreign material in the nose.

Benefits Of Sinuplasty

  • Unlike the traditional sinus surgeries, balloon sinuplasty does not involve cutting of nasal bone or the tissues.
  • Recovery time is only one or two days which is very less compared to traditional sinus surgery which takes few days for a patient to recover.
  • Balloon sinuplasty works with the natural openings, thus causing less damage and much lower risk of scarring.
  • In case of traditional surgery, due to the bleeding, it often requires uncomfortable packing of the nose post-operatively, which is not necessary with balloon sinuplasty.
  • Fast Recovery

In addition to chronic sinusitis, Balloon Sinuplasty can also be performed in patients who suffer with:

  • Congestion
  • Nasal blockage
  • Post nasal drip
  • Allergies
  • Nasal polyps

Post-Operative Care

In general, Balloon Sinuplasty is not associated with any risks. The post-operative care signs and symptoms include:

  • Numbness of the nose, face, throat and upper teeth for 1-2 hours after surgery.
  • Small amount of bloody nasal drainage is common after the surgery for 1-2 days. It may flow from front of nose and down the back of the throat. Make sure you spit out the blood drainage that drips into throat, to prevent nausea and vomiting.
  • Facial pressure and fullness for a few days post-operatively, as a result of the nasal dilation
  • Avoid blowing nose aggressively for one week after the surgery
  • Avoid lifting heavy weights and strenuous exercises
  • Avoid airplane traveling for one week after the surgery
  • Nasal congestion for a week after surgery
  • Bleeding, pain, fatigue and discharge are common.
  • Nasal saline sprays and sinus irrigations should be used, as prescribed by the surgeon.
