RHINOPLASTY

Rhinoplasty, referred to as a "nose job" or "nose reshaping" by patients, is a surgery done to enhance the facial harmony and the proportion of your nose with the face. It also corrects the impaired breathing, caused by structural defects in the nose.

Rhinoplasty is indicated for medical reasons like correcting breathing problems or deformity of nose resulting from trauma or birth defects. Also, it is performed for cosmetic reasons to improve the shape of the nose, nasal asymmetry etc. for better appeal.

RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH RHINOPLASTY:

  • Recurring nosebleeds
  • Difficulty breathing through your nose
  • Permanent numbness in and around your nose
  • Possibility of an uneven-looking nose
  • Pain, discoloration or swelling that may persist
  • Infection
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Change in skin sensation (numbness or pain)
  • Scarring
  • Hole in the septum (septal perforation)

PROCEDURE:

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under local or general anaesthesia. It generally takes between one to two hours. If the surgery is complex, it can take longer. Under anaesthesia, the surgeon will perform the procedure in the nostrils. In some difficult cases, surgeon may also make cuts across the base for reshaping. Additional cartilage, if required, may be removed from your ear or deep inside your nose. If more is necessary, you might get an implant or a bone graft (additional bone that’s added to the bone in your nose).

POST-OPERATIVE CARE:

Post-operatively one may observe the following symptoms:

Swelling: Swelling of your nose and the surrounding areas of your cheek and upper lip is the normal result of the nasal surgery. The swelling will gradually resolve over varying time periods. Keeping your head elevated over the first few weeks, avoiding bending over or heavy lifting for the first few weeks, and avoiding prolonged sun exposure for the first two to three months helps in minimizing the swelling.

Bruising: Post-operatively, bruising is commonly observed around the nose, cheeks and lower eyelids. It should resolve over the first two weeks.

Numbness: Numbness of your nose is quite common following the surgery and will subside over the coming weeks to months.

Bleeding: If bleeding occurs, lying down with your head elevated, or using cool compresses may help in minimizing the bleeding.

POST-OPERATIVE LIMITATIONS:

  • Wear a nasal splint for the first week
  • Avoid strenuous activity for three to six weeks after surgery
  • Avoid lifting heavy weights for three weeks
  • No pull-over clothing for two weeks
  • Avoid yawning, wide mouth opening and hard chewing foods for two weeks
  • Avoid nose blowing or sniffing through the nose for two weeks
  • Use a baby toothbrush on the upper teeth for two weeks following surgery
  • If sneezing, sneeze with the mouth open for two weeks
  • No driving for one, preferably two weeks after surgery
  • No contact sports for six weeks

The healing time for rhinoplasty is less than expected and the results are worth the wait. While, the swelling should be completely disappear after four to six weeks, healing will continue for the entire first year.
