Dry Sinuses What you can do

POSTED ON March 16, 2018 BY BSR Hospitals

Chronic Sinusitis is one of the most common medical problems, that hit one in eight people in India. A type of sinus irritation that can lead to sinusitis is a dry sinus. Dry sinuses occur when the mucous membrane in your sinuses lack enough moisture.

This can cause symptoms of Dry Sinus such as:

  • Dry nasal passages ( nose and mouth)
  • Discomfort
  • Nosebleeds,
  • Cracked skin
  • Painful and sensitive Sinuses and similar unpleasant symptoms.

Sinuses are air passages located behind the nose, below the eyes and on the cheekbone. These are extremely sensitive areas of the head. With dry sinus, there may be no clogs, but the pain is present. When the nose is dry, it cannot filter the air that passes through it with unwanted bacteria and viruses.

Treatment measures

To alleviate Dry Sinus, the following measures can be taken:

Avoid dry and hot places. A humid environment is preferable. Ideally, your home humidity level should be around 30–50%. If the air is too dry or taking a steam bath may help.

Drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated. This will alleviate some dryness in the nose and throat. Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol to alleviate dehydration.

Try to avoid antihistamines (medicine to relieve allergies but cause further dryness in the nose) as they may exacerbate the dryness and lead to further discomfort.

Avoid other medications that increase dryness. Many traditional sinusitis medications can dry out your nasal passages.

Talk to your ENT specialist for a solution. Your doctor may prescribe over-the-counter emollients, nasal sprays, or nasal drops to cleanse and lubricate your nasal passages instead. Follow your doctor’s instructions.
